It\u2019s in these moments that calm often takes over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So why not show yourself the same compassion?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to\u00a0Mercedes Timko, MD, Penn Medicine\u2019s Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine Department, many people have trouble embracing self-compassion, even though it\u2019s central to our emotional health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWithout self-compassion, it\u2019s difficult to foster any kind of mental-emotional wellness,\u201d Dr Timko says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While there are lots of interpretations of self-compassion, at its core it\u2019s being kind and understanding toward yourself, especially in the wake of an experience you perceive as a failure or shortcoming.
