ACTH is a\u00a0hormone\u00a0made by the pituitary gland, a small gland at the base of the brain. ACTH controls the production of another hormone called cortisol. Cortisol is made by the adrenal glands, two small glands located above the kidneys. Cortisol plays an important role in helping you to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Respond to\u00a0stress<\/li><li>Fight infection<\/li><li>Regulate\u00a0blood sugar<\/li><li>Maintain blood pressure<\/li><li>Regulate metabolism, the process of how your body uses food and energy<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Too much or too little cortisol can cause serious health problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other names: Adrenocorticotropic hormone blood test, corticotropin<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is it used for?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An ACTH test is often done along with a\u00a0cortisol test\u00a0to diagnose disorders of the\u00a0pituitary\u00a0or\u00a0adrenal glands. These include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Cushing\u2019s syndrome<\/strong> is a disorder in which the adrenal gland makes too much cortisol. It may be caused by a tumour in the pituitary gland or the use of steroid medicines. Steroids are used to treat inflammation but can have side effects that affect cortisol levels.<\/li><li>Cushing\u2019s disease is a form of Cushing\u2019s syndrome. Cushing\u2019s disease is usually caused by a noncancerous\u00a0tumour\u00a0of the pituitary gland. The tumour makes too much ACTH. This causes the adrenal glands to make too much cortisol.<\/li><li><strong>Addison disease<\/strong> is a condition in which the adrenal gland doesn\u2019t make enough cortisol.<\/li><li>Hypopituitarism is a disorder in which the pituitary gland does not make enough of some or all of its hormones.<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is an adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) test?
