Dash Coin History<\/span><\/h2>\n

The currency was launched in January 2014 as “Xcoin” by Evan Duffield, as a\u00a0fork<\/a>\u00a0of the\u00a0Bitcoin<\/a> protocol.\u00a0It is an\u00a0altcoin<\/a> and in its early days, it was subject to\u00a0pump and dump speculation. It was rebranded as Darkcoin<\/sup>, which received press for being used in darknet markets.<\/sup>\u00a0In March 2015, it rebranded again with the name Dash as a\u00a0portmanteau\u00a0of ‘digital cash’.<\/sup>\u00a0As of August 2016, Dash is no longer used in any major dark net markets worth noting.<\/sup><\/p>\n

In early 2017 Duffield, who lived in the Phoenix area, and some other people working on Dash took space in a\u00a0business incubator\u00a0at\u00a0Arizona State University<\/a>.<\/sup>\u00a0The Dash DAO later funded a blockchain research lab at ASU.<\/sup><\/p>\n

As of April\u00a02018, Dash’s\u00a0market capitalization<\/a>\u00a0was around $4.3 billion and it was one of the top 12 cryptocurrencies.<\/sup><\/p>\n

As of February\u00a02019, Dash was the most popular cryptocurrency in Venezuela according to Der Spiegel.<\/sup><\/p>\n

Design and governance<\/span><\/h2>\n

Dash was designed to allow transactions quickly and to have a swift governance structure in order to overcome shortfalls in\u00a0Bitcoin<\/a>.<\/sup><\/p>\n

Governance<\/span><\/h3>\n

Governance is handled through a form of\u00a0decentralized autonomous organization<\/a>\u00a0in which decisions are made on a\u00a0blockchain<\/a>\u00a0via masternodes. Masternodes perform standard\u00a0node<\/a> functions like hosting a copy of the blockchain, relaying messages, and validating transactions on the network, and in addition act as shareholders, voting on proposals for improving Dash’s ecosystem. Along with master nodes, the system includes standard nodes and\u00a0miners<\/a>.[1]<\/a><\/sup>[10]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Running a masternode requires ownership of 1000 Dash. Masternodes are also required to have a static IP address and meet minimum requirements for CPU, RAM, disk space and network bandwidth.<\/sup><\/p>\n

Proof of service protocol ensures that master nodes have the most current blockchain protocol and are online.<\/sup><\/p>\n
